Amite County Courthouse-Built in 1840, and replacing an earlier 1812 log structure on the site, is the oldest courthouse in continuous use in the State of Mississippi. It is said that the Courthouse is situated on an old Indian ball field used for hundreds of years prior to settlement by the Europeans. Amite County, the 5th oldest county in the state, was carved out of the Old Natchez District in 1809. The records here go back to that time period, and are considered to be one of the most complete sets of county records that exist today in the deep South.
